The tissue removal catheter comprises a drive shaft (12) and a tissue removal head (14). The tissue removal head is at the distal end of the drive shaft and is configured to rotate about the longitudinal axis of the drive shaft. The tissue removal head can be selectively adjusted from an initial cross-sectional shape (D 1) to an expanded cross-sectional shape larger than the initial cross-sectional shape. The tissue removal catheter may further comprise an expansion mechanism configured to selectively adjust the tissue removal head to an expanded cross-sectional shape from an initial cross-sectional shape.
